Robbie Ray bounced back from a rocky first inning, while the San Francisco Giants' offense delivered enough to hold off the Colorado Rockies.
The San Francisco Giants wasted little time putting themselves in control Saturday night, scoring four runs in the opening inning before leaning on Robbie Ray and the bullpen to finish off a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.
San Francisco's offense set the tone immediately against Colorado starter Sean Sullivan, giving Ray an early cushion that ultimately proved to be enough despite a brief scare in the first inning.
Ray Shakes Off Early Trouble
Ray's outing took an unexpected turn in the opening frame.
While covering first base on a ground ball, the veteran left-hander tumbled awkwardly after receiving a flip from Rafael Devers. After a brief visit from the training staff, Ray remained in the game but immediately ran into more trouble.
Colorado strung together four consecutive baserunners, with Cole Carrigg's three-run homer quickly trimming San Francisco's early advantage.
Rather than unravel, Ray settled into a rhythm.
The left-hander retired hitters efficiently over the remainder of his outing, completing six innings while allowing three runs and striking out four. His ability to regroup after both the fall and first-inning damage prevented Colorado from building any sustained momentum.
Ray improved to 8-6 on the season with the victory.
Giants' Lineup Delivers Early
San Francisco's lineup did the bulk of its damage before the Rockies could settle into the game.
Willy Adames highlighted the opening rally with a two-run double, helping the Giants jump ahead early. Newly selected All-Star Luis Arraez continued his outstanding season by collecting three hits, including an RBI single that added to the first-inning outburst.
Bryce Eldridge also continued his impressive offensive stretch. The rookie slugger launched a solo home run and later drove in another run with a double, giving him two extra-base hits on the night.
Sullivan lasted 5 2/3 innings but surrendered six runs before departing, allowing the Giants to maintain control throughout most of the evening.
Bullpen Holds On
Colorado made one final push in the ninth inning.
Caleb Kilian allowed a two-out RBI single to pinch-hitter TJ Rumfield, bringing the tying run closer to the plate. The right-hander responded by striking out Troy Johnston to end the game and secure his eighth save of the season.
The game also featured two unusual interruptions. First pitch was delayed 46 minutes because of weather, and play was briefly halted before the fifth inning after home-plate umpire Scott Barry exited following a foul ball off his mask, forcing a crew adjustment behind the plate.
The Giants will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday behind right-hander Tyler Mahle.
