Landen Roupp continued his impressive development while Willy Adames delivered the decisive swing in a 7-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The San Francisco Giants opened the second half of the season with exactly the type of performance they needed.
While the 7-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners was certainly encouraging, the bigger takeaway was what it said about two players who could play important roles in the organization's outlook moving forward: Landen Roupp and Willy Adames.
Roupp, in particular, delivered another outing that continued to reinforce his growth as a major-league starter. Adames, meanwhile, supplied the offense with one swing that put the game out of reach.
Roupp delivered for Giants
Roupp played an enormous role in the Giants' victory, not only by limiting Seattle's offense but also by controlling the running game throughout the night. His command of the game from the mound allowed San Francisco to dictate the pace from the opening innings.
His final line was one of his strongest in recent memory: seven shutout innings, two hits allowed, three walks, and two strikeouts. While the strikeout total was modest, he consistently generated weak contact and never allowed the Mariners to build any sustained offensive momentum.
That outing came on the heels of another impressive start on July 6 against the Toronto Blue Jays, when Roupp worked eight innings while allowing just one run.
The encouraging part isn't simply that he put together two quality starts. It's that he has continued to build on his success and carry that momentum through the All-Star break.
Consistent pitching efforts help Roupp
That type of consistency is an important step in his development.
The 2026 season has been a significant growth year for the right-hander. He showed plenty of promise in 2025, but injuries interrupted portions of that campaign. This season, he has taken on a much larger role in the Giants' rotation and has emerged as one of the club's brightest spots.
Considering where the Giants currently stand, performances like this only strengthen his importance moving forward.
With the July 31 MLB Trade Deadline approaching and San Francisco expected to be sellers, Roupp represents one of the organization's biggest reasons for optimism beyond this season.
Offensively, the night belonged to Adames.
His grand slam in the seventh inning broke the game open and accounted for four of the Giants' seven runs. San Francisco already held a 3-0 lead at that point, but the home run eliminated any chance of a Seattle comeback and served as the game's defining offensive moment.
Adames comes through in big situation
Adames' second season with the Giants has been an interesting one. His power production has remained relatively steady, but much of the rest of his offensive game has taken a step back. Given the contract he signed, it's fair to expect more consistent production across the board.
Still, the second half offers a fresh start — not only for Adames but for the Giants' offense as a whole.
Whatever happened during the first half can now become background noise if the club begins to play more complete baseball. The offensive struggles were significant, especially considering the number of established hitters who have underperformed.
Realistically, the Giants appear to be out of the postseason picture. Between the strength of the National League and the competitiveness of the National League West, climbing back into the playoff race will be difficult.
Giants might deal away players on expiring contracts
That doesn't mean the organization will completely tear down the roster. More likely, the Giants will move veterans on expiring contracts, such as Robbie Ray and Luis Arraez, while potentially dealing bullpen pieces like Matt Gage.
Even so, that approach doesn't necessarily represent a step backward.
If those moves help position the organization for a stronger future, they could ultimately prove beneficial. The Giants also closed the first half with an encouraging series against the Colorado Rockies, showing there are still areas in which this team can continue to improve.
Opening the second half with a performance like this won't erase the frustrations of the first few months, but it does provide a positive foundation.
If Roupp continues his emergence and Adames finds another level offensively, the Giants can spend the remainder of the season building toward a more promising future rather than simply playing out the schedule.
