San Francisco Giants finalize Opening Day roster, spotlighting Caleb Kilian's comeback and Daniel Susac securing backup catcher duties.
The San Francisco Giants announced their Opening Day roster early Wednesday morning ahead of their matchup with the New York Yankees, finalizing a series of moves that clarified both bullpen depth and positional battles.
Among the most notable decisions, the Giants selected outfielder Jared Oliva and right-hander Caleb Kilian from Triple-A Sacramento.
Meanwhile, left-hander Sam Hentges and right-hander Joel Peguero were placed on the 15-day Injured List (retroactive to March 22), and left-hander Reiver Sanmartín was transferred to the 60-day IL.
The club also designated outfielder Luis Matos for assignment, reassigned right-hander Michael Fulmer to Triple-A, and released veteran catcher Eric Haase.
Kilian’s inclusion stands out as one of the more compelling roster decisions. The right-hander impressed throughout the spring despite limited opportunities, posting a 0.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across 9 1/3 innings.
His performance comes at a critical time for the Giants' bullpen that has been searching for reliable depth and stability.
Originally developed within the Giants' organization, Kilian was dealt to the Chicago Cubs in 2021 as part of the trade that brought former MVP Kris Bryant to San Francisco.
After battling injuries and inconsistency in Chicago, Kilian returned to the Giants on a minor-league deal this past December, now completing a full-circle moment by earning a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Behind the plate, the Giants also solidified their backup catcher role following Haase’s release. That move clears the path for top prospect Daniel Susac to serve as the primary backup to Patrick Bailey.
Susac made a strong case for the job throughout camp. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins after they selected him from the Athletics in the Rule 5 Draft, the young catcher showcased both offensive consistency and poise.
Over 40 at-bats this spring, Susac hit .328 with a .386 on-base percentage and two home runs, emerging as one of the more impressive performers in camp.
With the roster now set, the Giants enter Opening Day with a mix of returning contributors, new additions, and emerging young talent expected to play key roles early in the season.
