The San Francisco Giants are bringing back a familiar arm, agreeing to a minor-league contract with left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi.
The deal includes an invitation to major league camp and would pay Lucchesi $1.55 million if he earns a spot on the big league roster, with an additional $300,000 available through incentives.
According to a report from MLB Insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the reunion comes as the Giants deal with limited left-handed depth in their bullpen.
Recently, fellow southpaw Reiver Sanmartin underwent an MRI that revealed a significant hip flexor strain, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The injury is expected to keep Sanmartin sidelined for at least three months, leaving San Francisco with fewer healthy left-handed options entering the final weeks of camp.
Prior to the injury, Sanmartin had been part of a small group of lefties on the Giants’ 40-man roster alongside Erik Miller and Matt Gage.
Miller, however, has also been slowed by a back issue during Spring Training, further complicating the club’s bullpen outlook.
Lucchesi, now 32, provided steady work for the Giants last season after transitioning into a relief role. Appearing in 38 games, he logged 38⅓ innings with a 3.76 ERA while serving primarily in middle relief.
Across his major-league career with the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and Giants, Lucchesi has compiled a 4.07 ERA over 433 innings.
Earlier in his career, he worked mainly as a starter before shifting more fully into bullpen duties last season.
The Giants ultimately chose to non-tender him in November, making him a free agent before this latest agreement.
Sanmartin, 29, joined the Giants on a waiver claim earlier in the offseason after spending his entire big-league tenure with the Cincinnati Reds.
Over parts of four seasons from 2021 through 2025, he recorded a 5.66 ERA while generating ground balls at a healthy rate but struggling with strikeouts, command, and overall velocity compared with league averages.
Despite the bullpen turnover the Giants experienced last year, the club made relatively few additions during the offseason. Among the turnover last season included trading relievers Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers in July and losing Randy Rodriguez to Tommy John surgery in September.
San Francisco did sign relievers Jason Foley, Sam Hentges, and Rowan Wick to major-league contracts, though none were expected to be ready for Opening Day.
The team also brought in veteran right-hander Michael Fulmer on a minor-league deal.
If Lucchesi’s contract is finalized soon, then he should still have time to ramp up before the regular season begins.
Given his success in a single-inning role last year, the veteran left-hander could once again compete for a bullpen spot when the Giants break camp.
