A disastrous series loss to the Colorado Rockies puts the last-place conversation in full effect for the San Francisco Giants.

The San Francisco Giants just dropped a three-game series to the Colorado Rockies, the only team that's been keeping the Giants out of last place in the National League West.

Now, the Rockies are just one game back on the Giants. These are two teams that have struggled mightily this season, and even that may be an understatement.

Through Sunday, Aug. 17, the Giants fell to 51-73 while the Rockies improved to 50-74. There's now just one game keeping these two teams apart, but it's worth noting that it was their final series of the year against one another.

Colorado took that series, two games to one, in what was the lone series between them in the second half. Going back to the end of May, the Giants also dropped two of three to the Rockies.

Come early July, Colorado did the same, only for San Francisco to end the first half of the season by taking three of four. Ultimately, the Rockies managed to win this season series, 7-6.

Giants drop season series to Rockies

Winning three of four from July 9-12 was incredible, but it certainly didn't provide the spark this Giants team needed to become winners in the second half.

This season has long been considered a lost cause, and if being 14 games under .500 didn't prove that going into the All-Star break, it sure puts things into perspective now that they're 22 games under .500 and just lost the season series to the last-place Rockies.

The Rockies have almost exclusively been in last place this season, but now, there's a real possibility that honor belongs to San Francisco by the end of the year.

Giants haven't won three games in a row since June 14-17

It's now been two full months since this team has won three consecutive games, showing just how much of an issue consistency has been.

After giving up 13 runs to the Rockies in San Francisco, one can only begin to wonder what the rest of the 2026 season is going to look like for these Giants.

They did their job getting younger at the deadline and freeing up some money by trading top names, so it comes as no surprise that this team is struggling as much as they are.

That said, dropping the season series to the Rockies feels like rock bottom, and it should. While it feels like things can only go up from here, only time will tell, and that begins after this squad's much-needed off day on Monday, Aug. 17.
