Luis Arraez’s status remains day-to-day as the San Francisco Giants lean on recovery amid injury.
San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez continues to work his way back from a wrist issue, with the organization emphasizing caution as they evaluate his availability against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Manager Tony Vitello provided insight into Arraez’s condition during his pregame media session, noting that while there has been progress, the infielder has not yet returned to his full routine.
“I think pretty well,” Vitello said when asked about Arraez’s status. “Wasn’t able to completely go through some of the stuff he normally does from tightness, but he also hadn’t gotten full treatment from our staff.”
Despite the uncertainty, one thing remains clear: Arraez’s desire to play is not in question.
“I never asked the question, ‘Can you play?’” Vitello said. “Because the answer is always going to be yes for him.”
That competitive mindset is something the Giants admire, but it also presents a challenge when determining availability. Rather than relying solely on the player’s input, the team is weighing the long-term picture, particularly with an off day looming on the schedule.
“I think with a day off tomorrow, it makes sense if we can get through today’s game without using him,” Vitello explained. “Which, again, I don’t know if that’s even a possibility. Ultimately, it’ll be up to him combined with our staff.”
The potential benefit of holding Arraez out goes beyond just one game. Vitello pointed to the value of extended rest in allowing the infielder to fully recover.
“You get almost three days of recovery,” he said. “So he can get to feeling great instead of just good enough to play, in an ideal world.”
Vitello also highlighted Arraez’s toughness, suggesting that the infielder would be willing to take the field under almost any circumstances.
“If it was just up to him, he could literally play on one leg if he had to,” Vitello said. “That’s just the mentality you get out of him.”
Still, the Giants understand the importance of balancing that mentality with smart decision-making. While the injury is not believed to be serious, the organization is focused on ensuring that Arraez does not return prematurely and risk further aggravation.
For now, Arraez remains day-to-day, with the final decision on his availability resting on a combination of medical evaluation and player input. The Giants, however, appear committed to prioritizing recovery — no matter how eager Arraez may be to get back on the field.
