Trevor McDonald delivered an improved outing on Wednesday despite the Giants' 3-2 loss.
The San Francisco Giants once again came up short against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, falling 3-2 and finishing the series without a win despite a stronger outing from rookie right-hander Trevor McDonald.
After struggling in his previous appearance, McDonald bounced back with a more composed performance and gave the Giants a chance to avoid the sweep. While encouraged by the improvement, the young starter was more disappointed by the final outcome than satisfied with his individual results.
“It was definitely better than the last one,” McDonald said. “But we still lost, so we definitely still need to make improvements.”
McDonald attacked the strike zone throughout the afternoon, limiting damage and keeping Arizona from breaking the game open early. However, the rookie admitted he still was not fully satisfied with his command.
“A little shaky on the command today,” McDonald said. “Just trying to keep getting better each one and help us out the most I can.”
Rotation Opportunity Continues for McDonald
With Logan Webb expected to return soon, the Giants will soon face decisions regarding their starting rotation. McDonald, though, made it clear he is focused strictly on pitching rather than roster conversations.
“That’s not my decision,” McDonald said. “My job’s to pitch. I don’t play GM.”
The rookie has impressed at times during his opportunities with the major league club, particularly with his ability to attack hitters aggressively despite limited experience. McDonald said his mindset has remained simple every time he takes the mound.
“I just take it mound by mound,” McDonald said. “Trying to do the best I can each time I get out there.”
Diamondbacks Continue Giving Giants Problems
Arizona once again proved difficult for San Francisco to overcome, completing another series sweep after already dominating previous meetings earlier in the season.
McDonald credited the Diamondbacks’ aggressive and persistent style of play for their success.
“They’re scrappy. They’re good,” McDonald said. “The ones that hurt, for sure, especially since they swept us last time. We really wanted the one today.”
The Giants now turn their attention toward regrouping before the next series as they attempt to move past another frustrating stretch against a division rival.
“Well, on to the next,” McDonald said.
