A viral scooter accident and dismal production have left Harrison Bader’s San Francisco Giants future in doubt.
The San Francisco Giants have had to go on quite a wild ride with Harrison Bader.
A viral scooter accident took the world by storm as the 32-year-old was basically dismissed from the team, but that was only for the remainder of the 2026 season.
As part of his end-of-season press conference, the one and only Buster Posey, Giants president of baseball operations, was asked about Bader, and he only provided as much info as he could legally.
After being placed on the 60-day Injured List, Bader's season ended before it ever truly started. It was an odd year for the center fielder, but there's still a world where he returns to San Francisco next season to finish out his contract.
Bader owed $13 million next season
According to Spotrac, Bader is set to earn a nice payday next year, should everything go to plan on his end.
When he signed a two-year, $20.5 million deal to come to the Giants, the last thing this team expected was for him to only play 30 games in 2026.
Obviously, injuries were one thing, but then the scooter accident was another. In no world did that help the team in any way, shape, or form, but it's not like his .170 batting average was doing much either.
"Everybody, including Harrison, is disappointed about how this thing unfolded," Posey said, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic.
Posey continued, "That's all I'll say right now, is that he's under contract for next year and there's discussions going on between the commissioner's office and the Players Association."
Clearly, there's more going on behind the scenes that Posey isn't legally able to talk about. They're likely still going through the logistics behind his payday in 2026, and in no world should the Giants be at fault for some irresponsible accident he got into while being on the IL.
Do Giants need Bader in 2027?
With an influx of rookies who helped pave the way through the end of this season, there doesn't seem to be a world where Bader is at the top of this team's priority looking at 2027 and beyond.
For what he's set to make next year, it would be quite ideal for the Giants to somehow get that contract off the books.
Whether that's in a trade or a legal matter where they're able to void it and start fresh, moving on from Bader heading into 2027 feels like the ideal scenario.
Again, his 2026 season came with a small sample size, but his 0.2 WAR was the lowest he had since a 14-game sample size with the Cincinnati Reds in 2023 when it was -0.3.
San Francisco marked the seventh team he's played for in his MLB career, so there's a world where Bader joins his seventh team in a five-year span come 2027.
