Webb, Roupp Stand as Giants Only Rotation Locks

After a season of instability and 14 different starters, the San Francisco Giants must rebuild around Logan Webb and Landen Roupp while hunting for veteran arms.

The San Francisco Giants’ starting rotation contributed significantly to their poor 65-97 record under first-year manager Tony Vitello.

San Francisco finished only seven wins ahead of the Colorado Rockies’ MLB-worst 58-104 record and 35 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

Giants starters recorded a 4.48 ERA, ranking 24th in MLB, and a 1.32 WHIP, which placed 20th.

Those results look worse considering Oracle Park’s marine layer creates a favorable pitching environment and makes scoring difficult. According to Statcast Park Factors, Oracle Park ranked 27th among MLB ballparks overall and 28th for home runs.

A year to forget for Giants’ pitchers

Only Logan Webb and Landen Roupp surpassed 155 innings for San Francisco. Webb reached 160.2, while Roupp finished with 155.

Robbie Ray also exceeded that mark, but the Giants traded him to the San Diego Padres during the season after 122 innings. He completed 165.2 innings between both teams.

San Francisco never established a consistent rotation and used 14 different starting pitchers. That instability made sustained success unlikely.

Starting pitching remains an urgent offseason need, but Webb and Roupp showed they can anchor the staff through durability and dependable work. The front office must find three more starters to join them.

Webb, a former Gold Glove winner and three-time All-Star, posted his worst season since 2020, although the struggles elsewhere in the rotation made his performance appear less concerning.

He recorded a 4.31 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 160.2 innings over 27 starts. His 3.46 FIP was considerably better than his ERA, and he earned another All-Star selection.

Despite declining surface numbers, Webb remained valuable by generating ground balls and limiting walks.

Roupp built upon his 2025 season, when he posted a 3.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 106.2 innings over 22 starts. He increased his workload to 155 innings in 2026, recording a 4.01 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 29 starts.

Roupp also lowered his FIP from 3.91 in 2025 to 3.73 in 2026.

He does not rely on overwhelming velocity. Instead, Roupp uses his entire repertoire effectively, particularly secondary pitches led by his curveball and changeup.

Webb and Roupp’s importance

Webb and Roupp were the rotation’s only two workhorses and remained dependable while others struggled. Their numbers were not dominant, but both continued competing through the instability surrounding them.

Webb’s established career deserves greater recognition, while Roupp is only beginning his. They should anchor the 2027 rotation, with Michael King and Bailey Ober representing potential targets.

San Francisco could also pursue a reunion with Tyler Mahle or explore other alternatives. As currently constructed, Webb and Roupp are the Giants’ only rotation locks for 2027.
