As pitchers and catchers reported on Wednesday to the Giants’ Spring Training complex, president of baseball operations Buster Posey set the tone for camp with a message centered on opportunity, competition, and adaptability.
While much of the offseason conversation focused on roster additions, Posey emphasized that several key roles, particularly in the bullpen, remain unsettled.
“Bullpens are tough to predict,” Posey said at a press conference, according to a video from NBC Sports Bay Area. “There’s opportunity here, and it’ll be exciting to see who grabs it.”
Posey noted that relief performance can fluctuate from year to year, making spring competition critical. Some pitchers are working back from injury, while others are looking to rebound from down seasons.
Rather than locking players into rigid roles in February, the Giants plan to build pitchers up and allow performance to dictate usage.
“It’s easier to build a guy up as a starter and then pull him back than the other way around,” Posey explained, echoing a philosophy shared by many pitching coaches.
Flexibility extends beyond the mound. Posey described the roster as one with multiple players capable of handling varied responsibilities, whether rotating between infield and designated hitter spots or adjusting to matchup-based deployment.
The Giants are also continuing to evaluate younger players vying for Opening Day consideration. Posey stressed that earning a roster spot will require growth across all areas: defense, baserunning, and offensive consistency, rather than flashes in just one dimension.
“It’s really just about playing well all around,” Posey said. “You want to see strides in every part of a guy’s game.”
Camp also marked another step in integrating new coaching voices. Posey spoke positively about the energy and authenticity brought by recently added staff members, highlighting the importance of mindset and preparation early in camp.
“When someone’s authentic and true to themselves, players buy into that,” Posey said. “That matters.”
Though the Giants could continue monitoring the free agent and trade markets, Posey indicated the organization is largely in evaluation mode.
“We’re happy with the group we have,” he said. “We’ll listen, but we have high hopes for this team.”
With workouts underway under the Arizona sun, Posey’s message was clear: roles will be earned, expectations will be internal, and the path forward begins with competition.
