Bo Davidson has emerged as one of the San Francisco Giants’ most productive Minor League hitters. Could he receive a September call-up?

The San Francisco Giants have had to turn to their farm system throughout the season, with injuries and trades creating opportunities for several young players to make the jump from Triple-A Sacramento.

With the regular season nearing its conclusion, the Giants could continue looking toward Sacramento for additional help. One prospect in particular has made a strong argument for getting an opportunity at the major-league level.

Outfielder Bo Davidson has put together an impressive stretch that has made him one of the more intriguing candidates for a September call-up.

Davidson, ranked as the Giants’ No. 8 prospect, was recently named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month after an outstanding August with Sacramento. The 24-year-old hit .323 with a 1.046 OPS and seven home runs over 26 games during the month.

That production has put Davidson in an interesting position as the Giants determine what they want to see from their younger players down the stretch.

A September opportunity would give San Francisco another chance to evaluate a player who has continued to produce at Triple-A. With injuries and roster movement already opening doors for younger players, Davidson has done his part to make himself difficult to overlook.

There is also another factor working in the background.

Davidson will need to be added to the Giants’ 40-man roster this offseason to remain protected from the Rule 5 Draft. That makes the coming weeks potentially important for the organization as it evaluates where Davidson fits within its long-term plans.

The Giants, however, do not have unlimited opportunities available in the outfield.

The emergence of rookies Turner Hill and Jonah Cox has given San Francisco two young players who have already begun establishing themselves at the major-league level. Their presence could make it more difficult for Davidson to find consistent at-bats if he were promoted.

That does not diminish what Davidson has accomplished.

His August performance was among the strongest stretches of any Giants prospect and showed the kind of offensive production that can force an organization to take notice. Seven home runs and an OPS above 1.000 over 26 games represent a significant opportunity for Davidson to make his case at the highest level of the minors.

The question now is whether that production will be enough to earn him a chance with the Giants before the season ends.

San Francisco has already demonstrated a willingness to give young players opportunities when circumstances create an opening. Davidson may not have an obvious path to playing time in the current outfield, but his recent performance gives the organization another reason to consider him.

At 24 years old, Davidson is also at a point in his development where a major-league opportunity could provide an important evaluation of what he can offer beyond Triple-A.

Whether that opportunity comes this September or later, Davidson has done what he can control. His recent production has made him one of the Giants’ more interesting players to watch as the organization prepares for the final stretch of the season and begins considering its offseason roster decisions.
