With the news breaking Tuesday from ESPN's Buster Olney that the San Francisco Giants are willing to move on from the top players on its payroll during the trade deadline, it speaks volumes about where the team is headed for years to come.

Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman are on the trade market and are expected to be moved sooner rather than later.

Now that the Giants are officially sellers ahead of the upcoming deadline, President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey is looking to give the team a clean slate.

While the moves may not be surprising, that doesn't change the fact that the news has come as quite a disappointment.

Although the Giants may have some great players to look forward to, the team is headed back to the drawing board to make it a contender again, even though it hasn't been one for years.

The last postseason appearance for San Francisco was in 2021, when they lost the National League Division Series in a decisive fifth game.

Since then, the Giants have been stuck in the worst position in sports, average at best, neither good enough to compete nor bad enough to say they're building for the future.

Adames, Chapman, and Devers are costing the team over $25 million annually and a lack of sustainable success, paired with a 29-43 start to the season, forces Posey to make significant changes.

Of course, the Giants weren't among the favorites to win the World Series heading into the season, but when three players account for over $75 million on the team's payroll, results are expected.

Especially when the Giants pulled the trigger on bringing Devers from the Boston Red Sox last June in a blockbuster trade, taking the remainder of his 10-year contract.

For Devers, to now be available and for a calendar year to have barely passed, that could leave fans with a sour taste in their mouth about the outcome of the trade.

Chapman has a no-trade clause in his contract after signing a six-year deal with the team in free agency in 2024. Adames, who doesn't have a no-trade clause, signed a seven-year deal.

Suddenly making players available for trade after you went all in to make them key pieces for the franchise leaves fans confused about why the moves were made in the first place and reflects on the failure of Posey's first experiment as the head man in charge.
