As the San Francisco Giants continue preparations for the 2026 season, one of the most closely watched storylines in camp centers on Jung Hoo Lee and his transition away from everyday duties in center field.

During a recent discussion on the "Giants Talk" podcast, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area shared insight from conversations with Lee about the defensive change and his outlook entering the new season.

Lee acknowledged that his performance in center field last year influenced the team’s decision to adjust his role.

According to Pavlovic, the outfielder showed notable self-awareness when discussing the move. Lee indicated that he understood the reasoning behind the shift as the Giants continue to evaluate their defensive structure.

Manager Tony Vitello has suggested the team prefers consistency when setting defensive assignments, which could lead to Lee primarily handling right field rather than rotating between positions.

Establishing a permanent role could help Lee settle defensively while allowing the club to stabilize the rest of the outfield alignment.

The situation may also depend on roster outcomes later in camp. Prospect Drew Gilbert is among the players who could factor into center-field opportunities. Established contributors such as Harrison Bader, who is joining the Giants in his first season with the ballclub, and Heliot Ramos provide additional flexibility across the outfield.

Beyond defensive positioning, Lee has focused on physical preparation after navigating the grind of his first full major-league season.

Pavlovic noted that Lee revealed he lost roughly 12 pounds during the year, prompting a greater emphasis on maintaining strength and managing recovery throughout the long schedule.

Adjusting his daily routine, including rest and nutrition, has become a priority as Lee looks to improve durability.

Offensively, the Giants are also evaluating how Lee fits into the lineup moving forward.

The addition of contact-oriented hitter Luis Arraez gives the team another option near the top of the order, increasing competition while also placing added pressure on Lee to take a step forward at the plate.

Despite the adjustments, the organization still views Lee as a key piece of its long-term plans.

A defined defensive role combined with improved physical consistency could position him for a breakout campaign as the Giants aim to build momentum heading into the 2026 season.
