The Cleveland Guardians fall to the Seattle Mariners on Opening Day.
Opening Day was not the start that the Cleveland Guardians were looking for as they fell to the Seattle Mariners 3-0. However, hot starts aren't a theme for Cleveland baseball as they now only have three wins in their last 10 season openers (2014, 2017, 2020).
One of the biggest frustrations came from the lack of offense that the Guardians produced throughout the game.
Cleveland finished with just four hits on the night and entered the ninth with just two. Amed Rosario and Jose Ramirez reached base in the final inning, but nothing was able to come from it. Yes, it's early, but at least one run would've been nice to see.
Credit has to be given to Luis Castillo who pitched an absolute gem of a game for it being his first start of the season. He pitched 6.0 innings, gave up 1.0 hit, struck out six, and didn't allow a single run.
The only hit that Castillo did give up was a rocket hit straight up the middle by Will Brennan. It was a scary moment as it appeared to have hit Castillo, but he was alright and stayed in the game.
There's a lot of baseball to play and we shouldn't let a slow start bring us down.
Remember last season when Cleveland opened in Kansas City, they scored just one run over the first two games and fans started to get worried this was the offense they'd watch all season.
Then in the third game of the season, they exploded for 17 runs and showed exactly what the offense could do.
This lineup is generally the same as last season, so it is possible that the same situation could take place. We'll find out on Friday as the Guardians and Mariners play game two of this four-game series with the first pitch at 10:10 pm EST.
