The Cleveland Guardians have a handful of players who will hit the open market.
As the Cleveland Guardians get started with their offseason, one of the front office’s first tasks will be taking inventory of those players entering free agency at the conclusion of the year.
Here are the players who were on Cleveland’s 40-man roster that fall into that group.
Foster Griffin
The Guardians made a handful of trades at the deadline, one of which included adding starting pitcher Foster Griffin. Now, the left-hander is ready to hit the open market.
Griffin’s stint with the Guardians wasn’t great in the regular season, logging a 5.19 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP in nine starts. He made up for that, though, with a strong playoff run.
Cleveland called on the veteran in three of their 11 postseason contests. Griffin allowed four earned runs in 10.1 innings (3.48 ERA) and struck out 15 hitters.
Given that Griffin is coming off his best big-league season at 31, after spending years overseas pitching to re-establish his career, it’ll be interesting to see what type of contract he gets as a free agent. There’s even a world where it would make sense for Cleveland to make an effort to re-sign the left-hander.
Austin Hedges
The Guardians and Austin Hedges have been operating on one-year contracts over the last three seasons. With that in mind, the veteran backstop will become a free agent yet again this offseason.
Hedges has been known for two things throughout his career: defense and clubhouse leadership. Those things remain true for the most part, even though Hedges’ run prevention has begun to slide with his age.
That said, Hedges put together a breakout season at the plate during his 34-year season. The right-hander recorded a career-high .702 OPS with a strikeout rate of just 18.2 percent and a walk rate of 10.2 percent.
It’ll be interesting to see what type of market is out there for Hedges, and if a return to the Guardians makes sense for both sides.

Nathaniel Lowe was another one of Cleveland’s marquee deadline additions who is set to become a free agent.
The veteran was having a resurgent season with the Cincinnati Reds before arriving in Cleveland. However, those same numbers weren’t sustainable with the Guardians, as he logged just a .651 OPS in 43 games.
Cleveland added Lowe in large part due to his playoff experience and World Series resume, and he did come up with a big hit in Game 1 of the ALCS.
However, with top prospect Ralphy Velazquez waiting in Triple-A, it feels more likely than not that Cleveland will let Lowe join a new team in free agency.
Rhys Hoskins
It took Rhys Hoskins a while to find a team last offseason, and now the veteran is set to hit the free-agent market once again in 2026. Cleveland hoped he would add some much-needed right-handed pop in the Guardians’ lineup, but that never came to fruition on a consistent basis.
Hoskins had just a .179/.306/.376 slash line with a strikeout rate of 14.8 percent in 2026. He last appeared in a game on August 19, but was then added to the injured list.
Now, Hoskins is heading to the open market again.
