Brayan Rocchio's grand slam and walk-off solo home run help the Cleveland Guardians take down the Detroit Tigers in the series opener.
CLEVELAND - The roar of the Blue Angels dominated the skies over Progressive Field late Friday afternoon. But by the time the Cleveland Guardians’ series opener with the Detroit Tigers was over, it was Brayan Rocchio’s pair of home runs that were making everyone on the field and in the stands look up.
After two frustrating losses earlier this week, the last thing the Guardians needed was to find themselves down big early to the Tigers in game one of Friday’s doubleheader.
However, that’s exactly the position the Guardians found themselves in. After the Tigers posted a four-run first inning and tacked on another run in the second, Cleveland found itself in a tough hole to get out of.
Resilience has always been a key trait of this current core of Guardians players, and that showed up in the bottom of the fourth inning when they tied the game back up at six runs apiece.
The game-tying swing came off the bat of Brayan Rocchio, who blasted a grand slam into the right-field bleachers, making it a brand-new ballgame.
Neither team was able to get back into the scoring column until the top of the ninth inning, when, yet again, it was Rocchio who played hero and walked off the Tigers with a first-pitch-swinging solo home run over the left-field wall.

Rocchio also made franchise history, becoming the fifth player in Cleveland history to record two home runs with five or more RBI as the team’s ninth hitter. The last player to accomplish this feat was Manny Ramirez in 1994
What made this performance that much more special for both the Guardians and Rocchio is that the team’s shortstop hasn’t been swinging the bat as well over the last few weeks as he was before the All-Star break. He even acknowledged that reality after the game
“It's a long season. It's a matter of stay consistent, keep your head up, and and go through the ups and downs,” Rocchio said through his interpreter, Auggie Rivero.
Rocchio also revealed that he had a little extra motivation at the plate with his family being in the stands.
Rocchio has been responsible for some memorable highlights down the stretch over the last few seasons, including his walk-off home run against the Texas Rangers in game 162 to send Cleveland to the playoffs and his home run during the ALWS 2026.
If the Guardians do go on to reach the postseason, his home run for Friday’s victory will undoubtedly be a clip that gets replayed for years to come.
