The Cleveland Guardians lose to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the ALCS, officially ending their 2026 season.
The Cleveland Guardians know what it's like to play with their backs against the wall.
They did at the end of the regular season just to make the playoffs, and again were in the same position when they fell behind in the ALDS.
They were hoping for a little more magic on Monday evening to force a Game 7, but ultimately fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-3, in Game 6, officially ending their playoff run and 2026 season.
Cleveland’s biggest need heading into Monday’s elimination game was clear: the Guardians had to get the bats going and somehow find a way to generate more runs than Tampa.
Did Cleveland’s lineup struggle that much, or was the Rays’ pitching that good? Either way you look at it, the Guardians just simply didn’t generate enough offense to come out on the team.
Peralta wasn’t as dominant as he was in Game 2, and Cleveland certainly had scoring opportunities off the Rays pitcher, but just couldn’t capitalize and get the big hit. He ended up allowing eight baserunners, and Nathaniel Lowe got to him with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, which essentially ended his night.

Unfortunately, just like throughout the series, the Guardians failed to come up with a big hit with runners in scoring position.
Even in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded, the Guardians needed help from a walk and a hit-by-pitch to score two runs. Brayan Rocchio then struck out on three strikes to end the threat.
At the end of the night, both teams tallied seven hits, and the Guardians even ended up with one more base runner than the Rays. However, Cleveland left nine runners on base and were just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Looking at Cleveland’s pitching, there was a lot of discourse about Stephen Vogt’s decision not to start Gavin Williams on short rest in an elimination game. Instead, the Guardians went with a bullpen game.
The decision from the Guardians was controversial, but it’s far from what cost them in the end.
Through the first six innings of the game, or the same number of innings a starter would have ideally covered, the bullpen only allowed three earned runs.
It was the two-run home run from Junior Caminero off Cade Smith and the two-run home run from Yandy Diaz off Hunter Gaddis that ended up being the backbreakers for Cleveland.
The Guardians now head into the offseason, reflecting on what went wrong in the last three games and how they can return to this position in 2027.
