The Cleveland Guardians give an update on George Valera, one week after he was designated for assignment.

The trio of injuries the Cleveland Guardians suffered just over a week ago did much more than impact the big-league roster. The front office was also forced to make tough decisions across the organization to open roster spots.

One of the moves the Guardians made was to designate former top prospect George Valera for assignment to reinstate Gabriel Arias from the 60-day injured list. This move left him on waivers as Cleveland risked losing the power-hitting outfielder.

Manager Stephen Vogt said last Sunday that the team would be “elated” if they got Valera back, and that’s exactly what happened.

A week after this move was made, the Guardians shared that Valera had cleared waivers and would rejoin Triple-A Columbus at some point this week.

It wasn’t too long ago that Valera was hitting second in Cleveland’s lineup. He even helped the team complete their historic comeback last September, winning the American League Central and securing a postseason spot.

Valera even hit a home run in Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Detroit Tigers.

In his first big-league stint last September, Valera logged a .748 OPS with two home runs and an average exit velocity of 91.1 mph.

It looked like the left-hander would be a key piece for the Guardians’ future, but Valera got off to a difficult start during the 2026 season. He started the season on the injured list, and once he was reinstated, Valera logged a .534 OPS with a concerning strikeout rate.

The numbers at Triple-A weren’t much better, which was part of the reason Cleveland decided to DFA him. The other was that the Guardians have several other Minor League outfielders ahead of him in terms of potential big-league opportunities.

With Valera back in the organization, there’s still a possibility that he could make it back to the big-league roster at some point this season. However, he really needs to cut down on the strikeouts and be added back on the 40-man roster for that to happen.

Still, with Valera being 25 years old, he has a chance to turn his baseball career around, and there's still a possibility that it will happen with the Guardians.
