For the third time in the last three days, the Cleveland Guardians made more roster moves as they continue to clean up their Spring Training roster, and the group that’ll head to Seattle for the first series of the 2026 season.
Cleveland’s most recent round of roster moves included some of the organization’s top prospects and some players who could end up seeing playing time with the big-league team at some point later in the year.
Both Angel Genao and Kahlil Watson were optioned to Triple-A on Monday after making solid impressions during big-league camp.
Genao, who ranked as Cleveland’s No. 3 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, had a very strong and consistent run with the big-league team throughout spring. He ended up recording five hits in 20 at-bats, coming out to a .718 OPS.
The 21-year-old might be the Guardians’ shortstop of the future, but he’s not ready to make that jump yet, so this move is far from surprising. Genao ended 2025 at Double-A Akron, and that’ll likely be where he starts next year, too.
Stephen Vogt said on multiple occasions over the spring just how impressed he and other members of the organization were with Kahlil Watson, both in the field and at the plate, but the Guardians optioned him to Triple-A on Monday.
Watson finished his Cactus League action with a 1.214 OPS in 14 at-bats. If Cleveland’s outfield wasn’t so crowded, he might’ve been a contender to crack the roster out of camp. He’ll start the season in the Minors, but that doesn’t mean he won’t make it to the Majors in 2026.
Ralphy Velzaquez may have put together the most impressive performance of anyone in the Guardians organization over the last few weeks. He logged a .385/.429/.538 slashline in 13 at-bats this spring. Cleveland reassigned him to the Minor League camp on Monday as he continues to develop.
The Guardians also reassigned two other depth players to Minor League Camp, being RHP Jack Leftwich and OF Wuilfredo Antunez.
After all of these moves, Cleveland’s Major League camp roster is at 50 players.
