Cleveland Guardians top prospect Ralphy Velazquez played a vital role for the American League in the 2026 MLB Futures Game.
Before the All-Stars take the field in Philadelphia later this week, the stars of tomorrow showcased their talent on Sunday during MLB's 2026 Futures Game.
One of the players who was named to the American League Rising Stars roster was Cleveland Guardians’ very own Ralphy Velazquez. (Cooper Ingle was also named to the roster, but did not play in the game due to his MLB promotion.)
Velazquez not only started and competed in the game but also played a key role in the American League's 6-1 victory over the National League.
On offense, Velazquez went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. He may have logged only one hit, but his opposite-field base hit scored Toronto Blue Jays prospect Jojo Parker from third base, extending the AL’s lead at the time.
Watching Velazquez come up with a clutch hit with runners in scoring position is no surprise to Cleveland’s top prospect.
Ralphy has always had the most potential with what he’s been able to do in the batter’s box. He started the 2026 season at Double-A, and after hitting .317/.414/.566 over the first 36 games, the Guardians promoted him to Triple-A.
It took the 20-year-old a little bit of time to get acclimated to the next level, but Ralphy now has a .777 OPS and a 107 wRC+ with the Columbus Clippers this season.
What did come as a little bit of a shock, though, was Ralphy’s phenomenal, unassisted double play at first base.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kayson Cunningham smoked a ball down the first base foul line. Velazquez caught it out of the air and had the instincts to turn around and tag Ryan Clifford as he tried to get back to the bag.
This double play stopped a potential National League comeback before it could even get going. Who knows how the game turns out if Velazquez is unable to catch the ball hit by Cunnigham and it gets into the outfield?
Cleveland is already elated to see what Velazquez can potentially do at the big-league level, whenever that time comes.
Given what Ralphy did in the Futures Game on both offense and defense, there are plenty of reasons to be eager to see him up in the Majors, hopefully sometime in 2026.
