The Cleveland Guardians received a relatively positive injury update on Angel Martinez.
The Cleveland Guardians’ trainers were unusually busy at the beginning of their matchup against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
In the first inning, Chase DeLauter left the game with an upper-body injury, and shortly after that, Angel Martinez joined him in Cleveland’s locker room after exiting with his own injury.
During Martinez’s first at-bat of the game, he fouled a pitch from Tarik Skubal directly off his foot. The Guardians’ batter immediately hit the ground in pain, and manager Stephen Vogt and the team trainer came out to check on him.
It took a couple of minutes, but Martinez finally got to his feet, walked around, and finished the at-bat. When he ran to first base on what turned into a groundout, it was clear he did not look like his usual self.
Martinez initially stayed in the game even after the groundout, but an inning later, Steven Kwan took over for Martinez in left field, ending his day early.
The team announced during the game that Martinez left with a left foot contusion and that the x-rays came back negative, which is already a good sign.
"Angel, left foot contusion, no fracture, so he'll be day-to-day," said Cleveland's skipper after Sunday's game.
All things considered, the is the best news the Guardians could have hoped for.

At the end of May, the Guardians outfielder missed a few games with left foot inflammation.
Martinez has been one of Cleveland’s best offensive outfielders this season with a .718 OPS and a team-leading 11 home runs.
Hopefully, the old foot injury and now the new one won’t mean an extended absence for Martinez, especially with the several other injuries the Guardians accumulated during the game.
