The Cleveland Guardians took a risk with selecting Peyton Pallette, and it's paying off so far.

The Cleveland Guardians took a chance over the offseason when they selected Peyton Pallette with their selection in the MLB’s Rule 5 Draft.

The right-handed pitcher had the potential to be a solid depth piece, but the tradeoff was that he had to occupy a spot on the 40-man and MLB roster, or be sent back to the Chicago White Sox.

Palette immediately started turning some heads during Spring Training, and that’s continued into the regular season. So far, he’s appeared in seven games and owns a 3.38 ERA (10.2 IP/ 4 ER) and a 1.03 WHIP.

The Guardians have loved what they’ve seen out of Pallette’s fastball, which has an average velocity of 95.3 mph.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the young pitcher's first month in the big leagues has been his ability to miss bats, which is something the Guardians also desperately needed more of from their bullpen. Palette currently has a whiff rate of 28.9 percent (69th percentile) and a strikeout rate of 25 percent (62nd percentile).

That said, Pallette has been prone to giving up some hard contact with the ball because he fills up the zone and throws the ball so much, but knowing when to make a batter chase will come with his development.

“Peyton's been phenomenal,” recently said Stephen Vogt. “He’s got good stuff. Mound presence, you wouldn't know that he was a Rule 5 pick.”

What Cleveland’s skipper has been encouraged most by Pallette so far is how versatile he’s been out of the bullpen.

He's somebody that we feel like… he could throw in a down game. He could throw in leverage, he can give you two innings when the bullpen needs it, and he's been able to bounce back, too,” said Vogt.

“I think that's been the, that's been the good thing with him. I mean, he, you know, had rarely gone back to back, had rarely gone multiples, and then thrown the next day, and he's done that a couple times now. So, really been impressed with the way Peyton's thrown the ball.”

Right now, Pallette has found a role as a pitcher whom the Guardians can turn to in a variety of situations.

If he continues to throw well and efficiently in those opportunities, though, there is easily a future where the rookie finds himself in more spectacular or high-leverage spots in Cleveland’s bullpen by the end of the year.
