The Cleveland Guardians made an upgrade to their starting rotation after pulling off a trade with the Washington Nationals, per multiple reports.
When looking at the Cleveland Guardians' top trade deadline needs, adding another starting pitcher wasn't initially viewed as a high priority to those outside of the organization.
But to the front office, it was a must, and Cleveland addressed that need on Monday evening in a trade to add a new starting pitcher to the already solid rotation.
The Guardians acquired LHP Foster Griffin from the Washington Nationals, per ESPN's Jeff Passan, in exchange for RHP Will Dion, LHP Josh Hartle, Kendeglys Viguez, and OF Nick Mitchell, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
The only top-30 prospect out of this group is Hartle, who was Cleveland's No. 25-ranked Minor Leaguer in the farm system.

The 31-year-old made his debut with the Kansas City Royals during the shortened 2020 season and bounced between the Minors and the Majors for the next three seasons.
Without a clear role in MLB, Griffin went to pitch in Japan to re-establish himself. After spending nearly half a decade overseas, he signed a one-year contract with the Nationals over the offseason, reportedly worth $5.5 million.
Griffin has dramatically overachieved compared to his contract, and owns a 3.06 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 22 starts this year. The left-hander has average strikeout and whiff numbers, but he excels in his command and in limiting hard contact.
These stats helped Griffin earn a an All-Star in 2026 nod for the first time in his career.
The Guardians' starting rotation has been one of the most dependable in terms of availability in all of MLB this season. Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, Tanner Bibee, Joey Cantillo, and Slade Cecconi have made every one of their starts this year, outside of a start by Logan Allen in a doubleheader.
However, outside of those six, Cleveland's starting depth is incredibly thin at the Minor League level. With Cecconi and Cantillo struggling over the last month, this gives the Guardians another successful arm to add to their bullpen and more depth throughout the organization.
This is now the second time in the last three years that the Guardians and Nationals have pulled off a trade on the day of the deadline. Cleveland acquired Lane Thomas in 2024 and helped the team reach the ALCS that same season.
In terms of immediate playoff success, the Thomas trade worked well in Cleveland's favor. Will the Griffin trade be as effective?
