Cooper Ingle owns up to his costly mistake in the Cleveland Guardians' loss to the Texas Rangers.
The Cleveland Guardians have officially lost four of their last five series with a defeat at the hands of the Texas Rangers on Tuesday evening.
Cleveland was tied with Texas at the top of the seventh inning. Even though runs have been difficult to come by for the Guardians, the game didn't feel out of reach, even at this point.
Unfortunately, the way the Rangers took the lead became the biggest storyline to come out of the game.
Tanner Bibee got Alejandro Osuna to fly out to left field.
Cooper Ingle caught the ball and then threw it into the stands.
The only problem was that Ingle had only recorded the second out of the inning. That error allowed the go-ahead run to come around and score.
Ingle was incredibly candid about the moment after the game.
“It’s a pretty embarrassing feeling," he said. “I went over and apologized to Bibee. If that didn’t happen, he might be able to go further in the game and save the bullpen a little bit.
Ingle continued, “It’s not something that makes you feel great, but things like that happen for a reason and learning from those things and moving on and getting better from them. It’s pretty much the only thing you can do."
You never know how a team will react after a key mistake like that, but Ingle thanked his teammates for picking him up the second he got back into the dugout.
"Having a group of guys that are behind you the whole time definitely helps. Things happen and he [Tanner Bibee] had my back and all the other guys in the dugout had my back," continued Cleveland's rookie.
Manager Stephen Vogt echoed this, saying, "We’ll learn from it and can’t control it once it happens. I just want to give a credit to the dugout. Every one of his teammates, when he came back in, had the same messaging."
There's no denying that this was a difficult moment for Ingle, and one he likely wants to already forget about.
It was only his second game in left field in the big leagues, and his ninth game in the outfield since turning pro, all of which have come in the last few weeks.
That said, Ingle handled the situation like a veteran, accepting responsibility for the mistake, which should only help him as his big-league career continues.
