The Cleveland Guardians are still trending in the right direction, despite their series loss to the Kansas City Royals.
The Cleveland Guardians traveled back to Progressive Field this weekend after an impressive road trip in which they swept both series. Unfortunately, Cleveland couldn’t keep that momentum going against the Kansas City Royals, dropping the first two games of the three-game set.
If there’s any consolation for Cleveland’s performance over the weekend, it’s that it salvaged the series on Sunday with an 11-1 victory where the offense really impressed.
Cleveland’s 11 runs on 13 hits outperformed what the Guardians were able to do through the first two games of the series combined.
Pretty much everybody contributed to this victory, too. Seven Kwan logged two hits, Chase DeLauter was 4-for-4, Jose Ramirez smashed his first home run since June 6th, Jo Adell drove in two runs on a double, and Nathaniel Lowe hit his third home run as a Guardian.
If Cleveland could have spaced out some of this production throughout the weekend, they might’ve found themselves on the winning side of this series.

“We've seen it over the last two weeks. You look at the past road trip, you look at the way it's trended really since the deadline. The offense was trending in the right direction,” explained manager Stephen Vogt.
“You're gonna have games where pitchers shut you down. You're going to have games where you just don't put it together, but we like what this offense is. We like what it's trending to be, and we're getting contributions up and down the lineup.”
Cleveland’s skipper is correct; the offense over the last few weeks has been objectively better. Cleveland owns a .265/.327/.376 slash line over the last 15 days, and its .703 OPS ranks 14th in all of baseball over the stretch, too.
Despite Cleveland dropping the series to the Royals, the Guardians still did their job over the last few weeks. The team knew it’d need a winning record in their matchups against the San Francsiago Giants, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels, and Royals, and they went 9-3 in this stretch.
Nothing gets easier for the Guardians from here, though. They’ll welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to town this week, who are one of the teams Cleveland is competing with for one of the three Wild Card spots.
