Chris Antonetti discusses where the Cleveland Guardians' top prospect, Travis Bazzana, currently stands in his development.
Everyone is eagerly waiting for the moment the Cleveland Guardians call up their No. 1-ranked prospect and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft
On Sunday, ahead of Cleveland’s series finale against the Baltimore Orioles, Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti talked about what he’s seen from the elite prospect and the development that Bazzana has made.
“I think he's continuing to progress and build consistency with his at-bats, and make progress on both sides of the ball offensively and defensively,” explained Antonetti.
Prospects in the Minors always have a plan they're trying to execute, whether it be mechanical or mental, and the same can be said for Bazzana. The 23-year-old is going through any major swing changes or modifications, the Guardians just want to see more consistency from the left-handed hitter.
“One of the things we've loved about Travis is [that] we felt he had a really good foundation in his swing and felt it was a very repeatable swing that, when he's been at his best, he's been able to do for long stretches,” continued Antonetti.
“Last year, he didn't have those long stretches to really get locked in, and he's working towards that right now. I think we saw progress over the course of spring, and the last week of spring was probably the most consistent he's been to date with his approach and with his, with the consistency of his swing.”

Rebilas-Imagn ImagesThis consistency is important, and the executive is correct: Bazzana didn’t have an opportunity to sustain a stretch of success beyond a week or two because of the midseason oblique injury.
After a slow start to the season, Bazzana is putting together a run of impressive outings and has raised his season OPS to .855 in just a week.
That begs the question: When will the Guardians call him up for his MLB debut? Antonetti really didn’t give any hints or an estimated arrival time.
“The things that we're looking at with Travis is no different than we would be thinking about it for any other player, which is, one, what's the opportunity up here, both in the short, medium, and long term, and then the individual's readiness to come up and help contribute at the major league level,” continued Antonetti.
“Those are the two considerations we weigh not only for Travis, but for everybody, and that's all encompassing.
That's not just offensively, defensively, base running, all the other things that go into it.”
Antonetti may not want to reveal a timeline for a Bazzana debut, but if he continues to hit as he has over the last week, a call-up to the big-league level could come much sooner than later.
