The Cleveland Guardians reached the ALCS this past season.
The Cleveland Guardians didn't make the World Series this past season, and the ending to the season was very tough to see for the franchise.
Cleveland did make the American League Championship Series while winning the AL Central during the regular season. But the Guardians held a 2-1 series lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS, with the next two games being played at home.
The Guardians proceeded to drop three straight after their Game 3 win, ending the year on a sour note. Cleveland will now go back to the drawing board, trying to figure out how to get over the top in the AL.
So, as the offseason gets going, there are a lot of questions around this club, namely, who will return. But the Guardians have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, and unless something drastic changes, it is likely to stay that way.
2027 could be another year of this gritty team fighting to get into the playoffs, and then the group looking to play spoiler. But the Cleveland fans want more, even if the ownership may not be willing to give it to them.
In a new prediction piece by MLB analyst Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Guardians were projected to make the playoffs again in 2027. Rymer has Cleveland end the year as the final wild-card team in the American League, going 83-79 and finishing second in the AL Central to the Detroit Tigers.
Within this prediction, Rymer does have Cleveland taking down the Tigers in the wild-card series, before losing in the ALDS to the Seattle Mariners. This would mean that the Guardians would regress from where they were this past season if this prediction were to come true.
The Guardians should look to add this winter, even increasing the payroll a little bit. With the success that this franchise has seen given the financial limitations, this group could go all the way with a little money invested.
However, it's more likely that Cleveland will look to make some trades for players on the roster, with outfielders Steven Kwan and Jo Adell as the prime candidates to be moved. The Guardians have done a good job of replacing players over the years, but it's been the same game plan over and over.
The offseason could be massive for this team, especially with the impending lockout coming as well. This could level the playing field a little for a team like the Guardians, but then it's up to the front office to make the right moves around the roster.
