Jose Ramirez and the Cleveland Guardians are reportedly working toward a deal to keep the superstar with the franchise for the long haul.

Jose Ramirez has repeatedly stated that he wants to be a member of the Cleveland Guardians for his entire career, and owes the city so much for how they’ve embraced him and his family.

He put those words into action on Saturday, with reports that the All-Star third baseman is close to signing a new seven-year, $175 million contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through the 2032 season.

Ramirez initially signed a five-year, $141 million contract extension with the Guardians heading into the 2022 season, which was set to expire in 2027. The new deal, if finished, will add an extra $106 million, with $70 million deferred, per The Athletic’s Zack Meisel.

Ramirez is coming off another MVP-caliber season, finishing third in the voting for the American League. He slashed .283/.360/.503 with an OPS of .863, including 30 home runs and a career-high 44 stolen bases. J-Ram was also a Gold Glove finalist at third base, finishing in the 82nd percentile in fielding run value and the 93rd percentile in outs above average.

Considering those numbers, Ramirez is still being paid well below market value. However, that doesn’t matter for Ramirez, as he’s found something even bigger in Cleveland: a home.

“I'm very grateful with the Cleveland Guardians and its fans, who have always supported me throughout my career. I feel I should stay here for the rest of my career because of the incredible treatment I have always received from the fans; I can't thank them enough for how loving they have been to me,” said Ramirez in an interview earlier this offseason (translation by Hector Gomez on X).

Ramirez’s ultimate goal is to win a World Series with Cleveland, and while the Guardians have come close to getting back to the Fall Classic since their recent appearance in 2016, they haven’t quite been able to accomplish that.

Hopefully, before Ramirez retires, Cleveland can help get their best player in franchise history a chance to raise the Commissioner’s Trophy just once in his career.
