After Messick's outing against the Red Sox, he’s up to 183.1 innings on the season. If that sounds like a lot for a rookie pitcher, it’s because it is.
Not only is that sixth among all American League pitchers, but it's also the most by a Cleveland rookie since Charles Nagy’s 211.1 innings in 1991 and the most by a left-handed rookie since Herb Score in 1955, per Cleveland's communication department.

Command has also been a strength for the southpaw, and it’s only gotten better during his rookie season.
With these stats, manager Stephen Vogt believes that Messick shouldn’t just be a true contender to win Rookie of the Year in the American League, but also a legit threat to be a Cy Young finalist, too.
Chris Antonetti talked about Messick’s phenomenal rookie campaign over the weekend, and one thing the executive said stood out to him was his mindset and how it hasn’t wavered throughout the year.
Messick is always looking to “earn” his next start, and that has helped make tremendous growth even with some in-season adjustments, such as adding some more heat to his fastball.
The Guardians have a chance to clinch a spot in the postseason as soon as Wednesday evening.
If Cleveland can punch its ticket to October, it’ll immediately start planning out potential playoff pitching options, and Messick will certainly be one of the Guardians’ top two starters in any potential playoff series.
