Parker Messick has been historically dominant for the Cleveland Guardians in his rookie season.
It’s amazing to look back at spring training and think that Parker Messick did not have a guaranteed spot in the Cleveland Guardians’ rotation heading into Opening Day.
To the pitcher’s credit, he forced the organization to put him on the big-league roster with how well he pitched, and Messick hasn’t looked back since then.
As the calendar gets ready to flip to September, Messick continues to be one of Cleveland’s best arms, a clear-cut American League Rookie of the Year contender, an All-Star, and one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball right now.
On late Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels, Messick pitched yet another gem in his long list of stellar outings throughout the 2026 season.
The left-hander threw 6.0 innings, allowed three hits, gave up one earned run, issued one walk, and struck out four batters. Messick put the Guardians in a perfect spot to get the win.
Messick’s season ERA is now down to 2.50, and his WHIP is at 1.01. In many ways, he’s a substantially better pitcher than he was when he joined Cleveland’s rotation just over one calendar year ago.
If Messick continues to post similar numbers through the final month of the season, he has the chance to be just the fourth pitcher in MLB history to record an ERA below 2.70 with nine or more strikeouts per nine innings, per Just Baseball.

Austin Hedges said after the game that one of the things that makes Messick so effective is his ability to adapt to an opponent's lineup.
“We pitch a lot with Parker's strengths, but we mix up some stuff up and feel like every time he throws the ball, it's a it's a different arsenal. It's a different usage… he's got all those in the bag,” Cleveland’s catcher said.
This is a skill set most veterans hope to reach at some point in their careers, but Messick has shown plenty of signs of already perfecting it.
At the same time, Messick said after Tuesday’s game that he has full trust in whatever pitch Hedges is calling, which goes to show just how in sync this pitcher-catcher duo is.
It’s been an incredible season for Messick up to this point, but the Guardians will need him to keep pitching close to this level if Cleveland is going to get back to the playoffs in 2026.
