The Cleveland Guardians are at the top of the American League Central after taking two of three games from the Chicago White Sox.
The entire baseball world knew just how important this week’s series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Chicago White Sox was.
The winner of the best-of-three-game series would sit alone at the top of the American League Central and put themselves in the driver’s seat for the final nine games of the regular season.
Cleveland may have dropped the series opener on Monday evening, but the Guardians came back to win the next two games in dramatic fashion and are now back on top of the division with a 0.5-game lead and now have a 78-75 record.
Wednesday evening marked the first time the Guardians had sole possession of the AL Central since July 3.
Each of Cleveland’s victories had an iconic moment to look back on that could end up being played in potential playoff hype videos.
On Tuesday evening, Brayan Rocchio reminded everyone the calendar says “Rocctember” with a two-RBI, walk-off double. Then, on Wednesday afternoon, it was Petey Halpin’s go-ahead three-run blast that put Cleveland in the lead for good.

If the season ended today, Cleveland would finish as the second seed in the American League, have a bye in the Wild Card round, and face the winner of the White Sox and Houston Astros.
Two things can be true at the same time after the Guardians put themselves back in first place: there can be excitement, but the team can’t let up, either.
Manager Stephen Vogt focused on that reality after the game.
“It feels good,” Vogt said, “but it doesn’t mean anything yet. We’ve got a job to do for nine more games, but it felt really good today.”
Cleveland may sit in a good spot right now, but there’s plenty more baseball to be played and a lot can still happen over the final three series of the season.
Right now isn’t the time for the Guardians to take their foot off the gas.
The Guardians may lead the division now, but they lost the overall season series with the White Sox, meaning Chicago owns the first tiebreaker between the two teams and essentially gets an extra game on Cleveland.
The Guardians can be excited about the spot they're currently in, but can’t look too far ahead just yet.
