The Cleveland Guardians rotation appears poised to once again be the team's biggest strength in 2026.
The key to the Cleveland Guardians 15.5 game comeback in September of last season wasn’t the offense. In fact, the Guardians overcame this deficit despite a lackluster lineup.
Cleveland found themselves on top of the American League Central for the third time in four years because of a historic run from the team’s station; a stretch that even rivaled the pitching staff that helped the team win 22-straight games in 2017.
The Guardians’ rotation of Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Joey Cantillo, Slade Cecconi, and Parker Messick (with Logan Allen starting the season in Triple-A) is all back for the 2026 season, and they're picking up right where they left off last September.
Ten games into the season, the Guardians have gone through their rotation two full times, and as of right now, the group owns a 2.98 starter ERA and a 1.15 WHIP, both of which rank fifth-best in the American League.
Those numbers are even more impressive considering the big outlier was Cecconi's start in Seattle, where he gave up six earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Williams is building off his elite second half and has given up three earned runs in two starts on top of already logging 17 strikeouts. Bibee hasn’t gotten as deep into games as he would’ve liked, but he’s still done a solid job limiting damage when on the mound.

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesPerhaps the most shocking part of Cleveland’s rotation so far is its ERA leader 10 games into the season isn’t Williams or Bibee, it’s not even Cantillo, who seemed destined for a breakout year.
The starting pitcher who has given up the fewest earned runs early on the season is the rookie of the group: Parker Messick. He and Allen were seemingly battling for the final spot in the rotation during Spring Training, and Cleveland opted to go with the 24-year-old, and it's likely happy that they did.
Messick has made two starts this season, one coming against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the other against the Chicago Cubs. Between those two outings, he’s given up just one earned run in 11.1 innings (0.82 ERA).
A sub-three ERA for a rotation throughout a full season doesn’t feel sustainable. Then again, that was the feeling last September, too.
Either way, the rotation is showing early on that it could be the core piece of another AL Central-winning roster, as long as it gets run support from the offense.
