Stephen Vogt had a simple message to Travis Bazzana before his Cleveland Guardians and MLB debut.

What does a manager tell a player who is the No. 1 overall prospect in a farm system two years after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft just under two years ago?

What did Stephen Vogt say to Travis Bazzana when he informed the top prospect that he made the team, and ahead of his first start with the Cleveland Guardians

You don’t want to put too much pressure on a 23-year-old, but it’s hard to ignore the expectations that are already present for Bazzana.

Before Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays and Bazzana’s big-league debut, Vogt said his message to Bazzana was clear: just play.

“Obviously called him and, made him aware that he's going to be on the team today, and we couldn't be more excited about it," said Vogt.

In terms of what Cleveland’s skipper is expecting from Bazzana, he told Bazzana, “Go have fun.”

“You've dreamed of this day since you were a little kid, and with every player that makes their debut, it's the same message. It's go have fun. You earned it. You're a big leaguer; no one else ever takes that away from you. Go have fun tonight, help us win a ball game.”

Bazzana certainly knows how to have fun playing this game. We’ve already seen his intensity come out in the Midwest League Championship with the Lake County Captains and during the World Baseball Classic earlier this year. He clearly loves playing baseball, and that’s exactly what Cleveland’s skipper wants to see out of him on Tuesday.

The other part of this is, hopefully, this simple and reassuring message from Bazzana will help him keep his cool and reduce the pressure he puts on himself to perform right away. Vogt talked about how when it comes to pressure, the person who puts the most pressure on a player is themselves.

If Bazzana simply plays his game as he has at Oregon State, the Minor Leagues, and in the World Baseball Classic, then he and the Guardians will be just fine, and he’ll do exactly what Vogt said to help the Guardians win.

Even after a slightly slow start for Bazzana’s standards, the left-hander has taken off at the plate as of late. His season slash line is up to .287/.422/.511 with 11 doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

Fans are certainly going to have fun watching Bazzana play, and hopefully, the rookie has just as much fun playing the game he dreamt of playing at the highest level.
