The Cleveland Guardians were swept by the New York Yankees, but the win-loss column doesn't tell the full story.
It's been a long time since the Cleveland Guardians have been swept by their opponent. That came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the New York Yankees took their third straight game from the Guardians.
Of course, no team wants to lose a series, let alone get swept by a rival on their own field. However, Cleveland tried to take a positive approach after the loss, and that positivity was evident in manager Stephen Vogt’s main takeaway on Wednesday afternoon.
“I thought we played well. I thought it was a well played series,” Vogt said. “We lost two tough ones, and then today, obviously, they kind of expanded to make it feel like it wasn't a good game, but I thought we, overall, we played well. We were right in there.”

Cleveland lost the series opener by two runs after going to extra innings. Then, on Tuesday, the Guardians and Yankees were tied at two runs apiece until the eighth inning, when Jazz Chisholm hit a go-ahead home run to seal that deal.

In the first two games, the Guardians had baserunners and traffic for what felt like all game, but the lineup hit just 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position, and left a total of 24 players on base.
Even one or two more hits in that situation could have changed the outcome of the game and the series.
As Vogt pointed out, playing these tightly contested games has been a theme for the Guardians over the last week and a half. Even though Cleveland has ended up on the losing end of these contests, the manager still thinks it can be a learning moment for his club.
“It has been a tough nine-day stretch. We've had a lot of close losses that could have gone either way, but we're gonna learn from them,” continued Vogt.
“This is a really good experience for us, and we're gonna enjoy the off day and get ready to go on Friday.
Hopefully, as the season progresses, these lessons will turn into wins for the Guardians in these one and two-run games.
