The Cleveland Guardians have had a notably quiet offseason after winning the American League Central, despite a roster that desperately needed more pop.
Even though Cactus League games started on Saturday, it’s better late than never to add that much-needed bat, and that’s exactly what the Guardians did. Rhys Hoskins was spotted in Cleveland’s lockerroom on Sunday, wearing Guardians gear.
Once the contract is finalized, Hoskins would be on a Minor League deal worth a base salary od $1.5 million if he ends up making Cleveland’s Opening Day roster, per MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins.
Assuming Hoskins does make the roster, he would add a much-needed veteran bat to Cleveland’s lineup. Hoskins may not be the All-Star caliber player he was through his first six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he was still a productive bat for the Milwaukee Brewers the last two years.
Hoskins recorded an OPS of .748, including 12 home runs and 12 doubles, coming out to a wRC+ of 109 during the 2025 season. That would’ve ranked third on the Guardians last year (minimum 280 plate appearances), only behind Kyle Manzardo (113 wRC+) and Jose Ramirez (133 wRC+).
The 32-year–old may have technically been better against right-handed pitchers last season, but Hoskins has historically hit left-handed pitching very well. He owns a career .882 OPS off southpaws.
Hoskins doesn’t bring much versatility defensively, as he’s primarily been a first baseman and designated hitter throughout his career, which is where he’d also likely be with the Guardians.
Overall, this would be a very low-risk, high-reward move for the Guardians once the team finalizes the contract.
Cleveland has needed a proven, veteran slugger to add to their still-young lineup, and someone who can hit left-handed pitching.
Hoskins brings both of those things, and it would be shocking if he did find his way on Cleveland’s 26-man roster heading into their first series of the season.
