The Cleveland Guardians partnered up with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday morning to make the first significant trade of the 2026 MLB season.
Cleveland acquired Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey from San Francisco in exchange for Guardians pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson, also known as Tugboat, and the No. 29 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
In all the shuffling of roster moves, the Guardians also optioned Bo Naylor down to Triple-A Columbus, opening up the opportunity for Bailey to get primary playing time behind the plate.
Of course, the main concern with Naylor this year has been his bat. The 26-year-old has struggled to generate any sort of offense, logging a .143/.200/.238 slash line. He has hit 12 hits in 84 at-bats.
However, as Naylor has continued to struggle at the plate, his defense has started to dip, too. He owns a fielding run value of zero.
Bailey fixes part of that for the Guardians as Cleveland brings in the best defensive catcher in baseball. The new Guardians backstop ranks in the 95th percentile in caught stealing above average, 100th percentile in framing, and 100th percentile in pop time.
That said, Bailey isn’t much of an offensive upgrade over Naylor. Bailey has a career .611 OPS and a slash line of just .146/.213/.183 on the season. He actually has the exact same number of hits as Bo does in 2026, with one less home run.

Mandatory Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn ImagesThe move here by Cleveland, though, was strictly a defensive one, and the Guardians certainly made an upgrade in that department.
The Guardians definitely give up something of value, though, in Wilkinson.
Tugboat may not be considered one of Cleveland’s top prospects, but the 23-year-old still has a Minor League career ERA of 2.82 and a WHIP of 1.10. Wilkinson was at Double-A Akron before the trade, and had a 1.59 ERA in six starts so far this season.
The Guardians have been noticeably more aggressive with their roster moves this year, both in calling up their top prospects such as Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana and in making a fairly significant trade at the beginning of May.
Perhaps this shift in tone in the front office could signal that more moves, both internally and externally, are on the way as the season continues to pan out.
