Potential Guardians Trade Could Hinge on One Major Factor cover image

The Cleveland Guardians could make a significant trade this winter, but it may depend on one major external factor.

The Cleveland Guardians just completed a historic run, rallying from a 15.5-game deficit to win the AL Central title. Unfortunately, the Guardians lost to the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Series, but it was a thrilling season, nonetheless.

The question is, will Cleveland actually double down and add pieces this winter? Or will the Guardians operate similar to last year and trade away some significant players?

Remember: last year, Cleveland sent Josh Naylor packing even though the Guardians needed to add bats, and some are wondering if they will do the same thing with Steven Kwan in the coming weeks and months.

Kwan has two years remaining on his contract, which is why the 28-year-old is viewed as a trade candidate going into the offseason. There were even rumors surrounding Kwan back at the deadline, but Cleveland opted to hold on to him.

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter has listed Kwan among his very top trade candidates with the hot stove just around the corner, but he feels that a potential Kwan move could hinge on whether or not another American League rival decides to jettison one of its own stars.

"However, his contact-oriented approach at a corner outfield spot is part of the reason the Guardians are lacking in offensive punch, and if they don't plan on signing him to a lucrative long-term extension then flipping him now could be their best course of action," Reuter wrote. "His market could be tied to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, who is also a speculative trade candidate."

Both Kwan and Durran were floated as trade possibilities back in July, so it should come as no surprise that the two players are once again being mentioned as candidates to be dealt with the offseason looming.

Kwan slashed .272/.330/.374 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI over 693 plate appearances this season, which was actually a step back from the preceding campaign when he slashed .290/.368/.425 and even briefly flirted with .400. In fact, Kwan's .705 OPS in 2025 was the worst of his career.

Of course, the Los Gatos, Ca. native is beyond elite defensively, having registered a ridiculous plus-22 DRS this year. He appears well on his way to winning a fourth straight Gold Glove, which should unquestionably boost his trade value.

But would the Guardians actually move the fan favorite with the team actually being on the cusp of making a deep playoff push in 2026? We'll see.
