Ralphy Velazquez’s Growth Continues to Impress the Guardians

Looking back to Goodyear, Arizona, and all of the storylines surrounding the Cleveland Guardians heading into the 2026 season, one that stuck out was how impressive prospect Ralphy Velazquez looked during his time at big-league camp.

Now, more than halfway through the regular season, that initial narrative continues to dominate Cleveland’s farm system. The more at-bats and games Velazquez plays, the more he looks like a future star.

Velazquez started the 2026 Minor League season at Double-A Akron. After an impressive .980 OPS in 36 games, Cleveland promoted the 21-year-old to Triple-A on May 18, just one stop away from the big leagues.

It’s taken Ralphy a little time to get settled at the next level, which Chris Antonetti acknowledged is a trend in his young career.

I think Ralphy has shown that as he's moved to a new level, it sometimes takes him a little while to find his footing. and then, take off from there,” said Cleveland’s President of Baseball Operations. 

The most important things an organization wants to see in a young player are growth, progress, and development, and Velazquez is displaying them. Over the last two weeks, he has owned an .892 OPS and a 135 wRC+ with a strikeout rate of just 13.7 percent. 

Antonetti continued, “I think he's now starting to make that transition to AAA. He's learning about the league, learning how some more advanced pitchers with both better stuff and maybe a little bit more experience are starting to attack him. And now he's starting to make some of those adjustments back.”

There’s no question Velazquez has the potential to be a star with the bat in his hand, and with that, possibly even help the Guardians’ big-league team as soon as this year. 

The big question is: where would the 21-year-old play in the field?

As a part of Ralphy’s development, the organization is having him get more reps in the outfield, even though he’s a natural first baseman and was drafted back in 2023 as a catcher.

Cleveland’s executive admitted this is still “a work in progress” for Velazquez, and the organization as a whole is working on.

“Ralphy’s put in a ton of work at first base to be a really capable defensive first baseman and an asset over there,” Antonetti continued. “We've now started to increase the amount of time he's had in the outfield for him to become, develop those capabilities in another position. I think in time, Ralphy can certainly be an option for us out there as well.”

Who knows if Ralphy will reach the Majors? Maybe it’ll be at the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027.

The important thing to remember is that he’s still 21 years old. Clearly, the Guardians are already encouraged by the development he’s made, which should only raise Ralphy’s ceiling for the player he’ll be in his prime.
