Jose Ramirez’s new contract extension with the Cleveland Guardians came as a surprise. Not because there was any question of where Ramirez wants or is willing to stay with the organization through his age 40 season, but the timing of when the contract came together
J-Ram still had three years remaining on the previous extension that he signed in 2022, and the team typically doesn’t negotiate extensions until spring training.
However, Ramirez wanted to ensure that he’d be a Guardian for life, and this deal does just that.
The team has yet to confirm or announce the new contract, but Hector Gomez, who initially reported the new extension and did a sit-down interview with Ramirez earlier this winter, shared this quote from Jose Ramirez about his next extension with the organization.
“I'm very happy to have reached this new extension agreement with the Cleveland Guardians. I've always said that I want to finish my entire career with this team, which has the best and most loyal fans in the world. Thank you to this organization for trusting in me. My main goal is to stay healthy and give 100% to this team so we can make the fans' dream come true: winning the World Series. Thank you for all the support and love. God bless you all," said Ramirez via Gomez.
Apr 19, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez (11) gestures an out call to the Pittsburgh Pirates bench during the ninth inning at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn ImagesRamirez's new, reworked contract and extension with the Guardians is worth $175 million over the next seven years, taking his team control with the Guardians through 2032. However, $70 million of the contract will be paid in deferred installments. There are, of course, some other reported performance bonuses and perks that come with Ramirez’s new deal.
In 2025, J-Ram had a .283/.360/.503 with an OPS of .863, including 30 home runs and 44 stolen bases. He was also one of the top defensive third basemen in the game, too, and was named a Gold Glove finalist.
Even this contract is well below market value for a player who is consistency an American League MVP candidate, and finished third in the voting a year ago.
However, money clearly wasn’t the only factor in Ramirez’s motivation for a new deal. From this quote, he clearly values finishing his career in Cleveland, and that’s exactly what this new contract sets him up to do.
