Patrick Bailey has been one of the Cleveland Guardians' hottest hitters in their lineup during the playoffs.
The Cleveland Guardians have made more trades since the start of the 2026 season than the organization typically makes in a calendar year.
Of course, some of the team’s highest-profile moves include deadline acquisitions Jo Adell and Foster Griffin. Both players have had big moments for the Guardians in their own right during the Cleveland ALDS battle with the Chicago White Sox.
That said, there is another player that the Guardians acquired early on in the season who is becoming a critical piece to the team’s postseason success: Patrick Bailey.
Cleveland decided at the beginning of May that it needed a chance behind the plate and pulled off a trade with the San Francisco Giants to bring Bailey to the Guardians.
Bailey has always been known as one of baseball’s best defensive catchers and has a Gold Glove to show for it, but he’d never been known as necessarily a great player at the plate, which is one of the reasons the Giants were ready to move on from him in the first place.
Bailey has lived up to being a tremendous defensive backstop and game manager for the Guardians, but the offense is what’s starting to turn him into one of the team’s most critical players in the postseason.

Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn ImagesThrough the first four games of the ALDS and of Bailey’s playoff career, he’s gone 5-for-12 at the plate (.417 average). He had one hit in Game 1, two hits in Game 3, and two more hits in Game 4.
This includes his solo home run in Game 4 to get Cleveland on the board, which was the first pinch-hit home run in the playoffs for the Guardians since Jhonkensy Noel’s game-tying blast during the 2024 ALCS.
“I was able to get in a hitter's count, took advantage of a good pitch to hit, and obviously it got the boys rolling a little bit and Josy with that massive homer,” Bailey said of that at-bat.
Bailey went on to drive in another runner with an RBI single during Cleveland’s game-changing sixth inning.
Bailey’s performance during the postseason has so far been one of the team’s best surprises of October.
With that in mind, it’s also important to remember that the Guardians might not have the No. 2 seed or home-field advantage in the ALDS if it weren’t for Bailey’s home run against the Kansas City to help the Guardians clinch the division during the final weekend of the regular season.
Yes, the Playoffs are about finding the best matchups, but they're also about playing the hot hand, too.
Bailey might not be a player that the White Sox have circled in Cleveland’s lineup, but the way he continues to swing the bat in these clutch moments, it’d be shocking if he wasn’t in the Guardians' starting lineup in Game 5.
