Lane Thomas didn't re-sign with the Cleveland Guardians over the offseason, but a reunion at the trade deadline is an interesting idea.
"Lane Thomas loves the first pitch."
That phrase from play-by-play caller Brian Anderson preceded one of the top moments in Cleveland Guardians playoff history: a grand slam off ace Tarik Skubal in Game 5 of the ALDS.
That highlight home run would never have happened if the Guardians hadn't acquired Thomas just a few months prior at the 2024 trade deadline.
Two years later, could history repeat itself, and could Cleveland trade for Thomas yet again?
With the trade deadline under a week away, Thomas looks like one of the best right-handed hitters on the market, and a reunion with the Guardians would make a lot of sense for all parties involved.
Cleveland desperately needs more offense, and Thomas is in the middle of a resurgent season after an injury-riddled 2025 campaign.
As the Guardians know better than anyone, the outfielder only appeared in 39 games last season after being hit in the hand by a pitch and a case of plantar fasciitis that ultimately ended Thomas' season early due to surgery.
But in 2026, in 92 games with the Kansas City Royals, the veteran outfielder has a .230/.327/.400 OPS and a 103 wRC+.

Thomas. 727 OPS would rank fourth on Cleveland's roster (min. 190 plate appearances).
Plus, Thomas' return to the lineup would give the Guardians much-needed balance to an extremely heavy left-handed hitting roster.
Would Thomas be all right with coming back to the team he had so much playoff success with?
Even though he didn't re-sign with the team, it doesn't appear there were any hard feelings when the two sides went their separate ways.
The Guardians did offer Thomas a deal over the offseason, which was similar to the one he ultimately signed with Kansas City. The difference was that the Royals were offering the veteran more playing time, while Cleveland viewed him more as a platoon bat.
With the season Thomas is having, every day at-bats in the Guardians' lineup should be available for the outfielder, even if the front office didn't think they would be at the beginning of the season.
Whether it's Thomas or another hitter, the Guardians need to add more offense before the trade deadline.
However, there's something to be said for Cleveland acquiring a player that the front office, coaching staff, and locker room are familiar with, and Thomas would be just that.
