The Cleveland Guardians could still be a perfect fit for free agent Austin Hays.

Chris Anonetti recently downplayed the idea of the Cleveland Guardians adding any more external additions to the lineup before spring training begins. However, you never know what opportunities will present themselves the rest of the offseason, and there are multiple impact free agent bats still on the market.

One remaining free agent, who is still looking for a home for the 2026 season, is outfielder Austin Hays, and the veteran could be a perfect fit with the Guardians.

At this point in the offseason, it isn’t a secret that the Guardians need more right-handed hitters. There are only four (Austin Hays, David Fry, Gabriel Arias, and Johanthan Rodriguez) on the roster, and they’ve only subtracted in this department this winter with DFAing Jhonkensy Noel.

Hays would present a much-needed right-handed bat in the lineup, and he’s one of the best, most realistic options for the Guardians in free agency or via the trade market.

The reason Antonetti and the front office are hesitant to add any outside additions to the lineup is that they don’t want to block opportunities for the young core, which is understandable. However, the addition of Hays wouldn’t do that.

George Valera is going to need a platoon partner in right field, considering he’s a substantially better hitter against right-handed pitching versus lefties. Plus, it may be wise to rest DeLauter on days when the Guardians are going up against a tough lefty on the mound.

That’s where Hays would be the perfect option for Cleveland to obe n their roster. The veteran owned a .949 OPS against southpaws a year ago, which is consistent with his career numbers against lefties. Plus, he was still solid against righties, too, recording a total slash line of .266/.315/.453 against pitchers from both sides.

Tim Stebbins of MLB.com recently even suggested that with the deferred money on Jose Ramirez’s new reported extension with the Guardians, that could open the door for more

Hays would be the perfect free agent to give a deal to who fits the team’s current makeup and wouldn’t break the bank.
