Parker Messick has been one of the Cleveland Guardians' best pitchers and one of MLB's top rookies to start the 2026 season.

The theme of the Cleveland Guardians' hot start to the 2026 season has centered on contributions from rookies and players still in prospect status.

Chase DeLauter has transformed Cleveland’s lineup and finally given it a true offensive threat behind Jose Ramirez. Almost three weeks into the season, DeLauter owns a .991 OPS and is making a strong case to be in the early American League Rookie of the Year race.

However, there’s another member of the Guardians roster who is making just as strong a case to be considered the top rookie in the league, and that’s Parker Messick.

Messick has made three starts so far this season, and each one has looked better than the last. In those appearances, he’s given up just one earned run in 17.2 innings pitched. His 0.51 ERA ranks fifth-best in all of MLB (min. 10 innings pitched), not just among rookie starters.

The 25-year-old also continues to demonstrate his elite command of the strike zone. Messick currently has a strikeout rate of 24.2 percent and a walk rate of 7.6 percent.

All of these numbers are impressive in themselves, but considering the teams and lineup that the rookie pitcher has faced, they get even more impressive.

Messick’s season debut came against the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings, issued no walks, and struck out five batters.

The rookie’s next start came against the Chicago Cubs, who were in the playoffs just a few months back, in wish hs struck out six batters and gave up just two hits. The only run Messick has given up all season came in this outing: a Matt Shaw home run, which had an xBA of .070.

The left-hander’s most recent start came against the Atlanta Braves, and he turned in another stellar start. Messick gave up just four hits with five punchouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

Are all of these stats sustainable?

Well, Messick will likely give up a few more earned runs throughout the season, but his command should help the advanced metrics stay where they are. Plus, he added a cutter to his arsenal in the offseason to make sure opposing hitters aren’t sitting on his elite changeup.

It’s early, yes, and a lot can and will happen over the next five months, but Messick definitely deserves recognition for being one of the top rookies to start the season, and if he keeps this up, he will be in the Rookie of the Year conversation come September.
