Brayan Rocchio has found success and consistency in the spot in the Cleveland Guardians' lineup.
When Brayan Rocchio was making his way through the Cleveland Guardians’ farm system, he always had the potential to be a high-contact and on-base percentage type hitter at the big league level.
It’s taken the 24-year-old a while, but he’s finally living up to that possibility; it just might not be where everyone expected it to.
Rocchio has hit every in Cleveland’s lineup throughout his career. No, seriously, from batting leadoff to cleanup, the middle, and the back, the switch-hitter has had an at-bat in every position of Cleveland’s lineup.
But there is one position where Rocchio has not only gotten the most opportunities at, but has also clearly been the most comfortable at, and that’s as Cleveland’s nine-hole hitter.
“That’s my home,” said Rocchio when asked about hitting ninth. “I feel really comfortable there. I have Kwan behind me, I have Bo in front of me, so, I’m in a good spot.”
The stats back up just how comfortable and productive Rocchio has been as Cleveland’s ninth hitter this season. When in that position in the lineup, he owns a .894 OPS with three home runs, three doubles, and 13 RBI. Runners are getting on the base in front of Rocchio, and he’s driving them in.

Mandatory Credit: David Dermer-Imagn ImagesStephen Vogt has routinely talked about how Rocchio’s job is to see pitched and get on base for the top of the lineup, and he is executing that job to perfection right now.
Rocchio is on track to have his best season in terms of on-base percentage, with his OBP sitting at .390 through the first 23 games of the season. He’s also seeing just over four pitches per at-bat, which is so far a career-best for the switch-hitter.
With this elevated on-base percentage, Rocchio has been on the base paths more and is tied for third on the team with nine runs scored.
Cleveland’s offense has clearly taken some strides in the right direction this season, and credit for that progress must be given to Rocchio, who is hitting ninth.
Rocchio being successful in that role is one thing, but the fact that he openly talks about how much he enjoys and is willing to hit ninth is a plus for the Guardians, too.
The switch-hitter has made that spot in the lineup his home, and Cleveland’s offense is better because of it.
