CJ Kayfus is fighting for a spot on the Cleveland Guardians roster after a strong end to the 2025 season.

The Cleveland Guardians' offseason was built on the idea that the prospects and rookies would finally get an opportunity to show what they can do at the big-league level.

So far during Spring Training, it looks like that’ll be the case for a number of players, with Chase DeLauter, George Valera, and Juan Brito all getting plenty of opportunities. However, as Opening Day approaches, Cleveland is in an awkward spot with one of their rookie sluggers.

CJ Kayfus had a tremendous Minor League campaign in 2025, was called up for his MLB debut in July, and ended up being one of Cleveland’s top hitters in September, but right now, it looks like he’s on track to start the 2026 season at Triple-A.

There’s no question that Kayfus had a slow start to his big-league career. In his first 74 at-bats, the left-hander had an OPS of just .585. However, he quickly turned that around and had an OPS of .888 over the final month of the season.

Not to mention, Kayfus is having a respectable spring, too. He has an OPS of .996 in 14 Cactus League at-bats.

That growth and progression should have given the Guardians plenty of encouragement heading into 2026, butnow Kayfus is fighting for a spot on the MLB roster.

Cleveland simply doesn’t have room or playing time for Kayfus heading into the season. Kyle Manzardo was always in line for everyday at-bats at either first base or second base, and the Rhys Hoskins singing makes the veteran the perfect player to partner with Manzardo.

Even though Kayfus can play the outfield, too, the Guardians don’t have open spots in that position group either. Kwan, DeLauter, Valera, and likely Nolan Jones and Angel Marintez could see time there to begin the season.

It’ll be interesting to watch how Kayfus’ season unfolds with the Guardians. The slugger has proven on multiple occasions that he’s ready for the big leagues, and Cleveland should want to see what his ceiling is. Last year, at Triple-A, Kayfus had a wRC+ of 151. There’s nothing left for him to prove at that level.

However, there’s simply not a spot for him on the Opening Day roster as it stands now, and it’s unclear when a spot could become available.
