At some point, the Cleveland Guardians need to give Kahlil Watson an opportunity, and right now might just be the perfect time.
When the Cleveland Guardians decided not to be big players in the free-agent or trade markets this offseason, the front office committed to giving young players and prospects a chance.
Chase DeLauter was on the Opening Day roster, and it only took a month into the season for the team to call up Travis Bazzana.
However, these weren’t the only high upside offensive prospects in Cleveland’s farm system coming into the year. Another player in that group is 23-year-old Kahlil Watson, and now might just be the perfect time for the Guardians to call him up.
Watson Is Swinging A Hot Bat, While Cleveland’s Outfield Struggles
The best time for an organization to call any prospect up is when they’re in the middle of a hot stretch at the plate, and that’s exactly what Watson is in right now.
The left-hander owns a .874 OPS and a 125 wRC+, including two doubles and two home runs over the last two weeks. His season slash line is now at .262/.371/.508 with 12 homers.
While Watson has been swinging a hot bat at Triple-A, Cleveland’s outfielders have been struggling at to generate any sort of offense over the last month. From the beginning of May through the first week of June, Cleveland’s outfielders have a combined .603 OPS, which ranks last in baseball.
At some point, the Guardians will need to make some decisions to get some more offense out of this group.

As long as the Guardians stay on the same pace they’re on, they should find themselves back in the playoffs in October with a chance to make a deep run. That reality should also make Cleveland buyers at the trade deadline.
Before the Guardians go out and give up a haul of prospects for another bat, they need to properly evaluate what they have internally and in their farm system.
Calling up Watson now gives the Guardians nearly six weeks to see what Watson can do and contribute to the big-league roster. Perhaps he is the answer to some more offensive production in the outfield. Maybe the Guardians do need to seek some more help on the trade market.
The only way to find out is to give Watson an opportunity, and right now is the perfect time to do just that.
