Ralphy Velazquez continues to be one of the Cleveland Guardians' most exciting prospects.
Up to this point, the Cleveland Guardians’ young core continues to be one of the top storylines of the team’s 2026 season.
There is still one player who could enter the MLB fold for the Guardians later on this year if he continues on the trajectory he’s on: Ralphy Velazquez.
Velázquez’s stock has continued to dramatically rise since last August, and it’s only continuing to go up since the beginning of this season.
Chris Antonetti recently talked about the development of Cleveland’s No. – ranked prospect, and what his near future could look like.
“Ralphy's had a great start to the season. Obviously, went to Akron and put together really good at-bats, continued to grow offensively and defensively, learning the game, and ultimately earned an opportunity in Columbus,” explained Antonetti.
“He's continued with the work that he put in in Akron. And Ralphy shows up to the park each day, working to prepare and get better. And I think that mindset has paid, has served him well so far. It's exciting to think about where he could go from here.”
The most interesting piece of Antonetti’s comments is that Velázquez, who just turned 21 on May 28, earned a spot at Triple-A.
It’s no secret that Cleveland likes to slow-play its young prospects, but the Guardians have shown they’re committed to giving Ralphy what he’s earned. Considering he has a .916 OPS on the Minor League season, could he earn a spot on the big-league roster at some point later this year?

That’s something else Antonetti addressed.
Velazquez has already gone through one position change since being drafted by Cleveland in 2023. He came out of high school as a catcher, but has spent most of his time in the field at first base. However, the Guardians are also giving him looks in the outfield, most recently over the weekend when Ralphy started a game in left field.
Cleveland isn’t committing to another full-blown position change for Velazquez, but, as Antonetti said, “We want to keep that option open. Again, as we've seen at the major league level, the more positions guys can play capably, the more chances they have to impact us up here. So, we just don't know where those opportunities are going to come. So we try to have guys play multiple positions in AAA to prepare for that.”
If (and at this point it still is an if) Velazquez does reach the Majors in 2026, there will be limited playing time at first base with Kyle Manzardo, Rhys Hoskins, and David Fry already in the picture. CJ Kayfus is another first base option for the Guardians if he gets back into the fold.
There are still many questions about Velazquez, his progress, and how he fits into Cleveland’s long-term plans. However, those are all exciting questions the Guardians need to determine answers to, and based on Antonetti’s comments, it appears the front office is already asking them.
