Back in November of 2022, shortly after the Cleveland Guardians were eliminated from the American League Division Series, the organization made a shocking move at the time by trading away former top prospect Nolan Jones to the Colorado Rockies.
In return, Cleveland acquired a young Minor Leaguer by the name of Juan Brito. His switch-hitting offensive upside and defensive versatility made him an intriguing prospect and a welcome addition to the organization.
Before the last season got underway, Brito was considered the No. 8 prospect in Cleveland’s farm system and looked ready to make his MLB debut.
Now, heading into the 2026 season, the Guardians have a dilemma with Brito.
In a perfect world, Cleveland would’ve gotten a good look at Brito during the 2025 season. He became one of the key candidates to win the second base job heading into Opening Day, directly after the team traded Andres Gimenez away during the offseason.
However, Brito had an underwhelming training camp and was optioned to Triple-A to begin the year. Shortly after the 2025 season began, the 24-year-old suffered a thumb injury that required surgery to heal. Once Brito finally made his way back to the field, he suffered a hamstring injury, which ended his season prematurely.

The puzzle Cleveland must figure out with Brito right now is determining where and how he fits on the roster, not just potentially at the big-league level, but at Triple-A, too, which is where Brito will likely start the season.
Travis Bazzana is set to get everyday reps at second base, which is Brito’s natural position.
Brito has played some right field and first base during his Minor League career, but those opportunities could go to CJ Kayfus, who looks like he’ll start the year at Triple-A as well.
At the rate Ralphy Velazquez is going, he could be in Columbus shortly after the season begins, which would eat away at more opportunities at first base.
To make matters even more complicated, but in a good way, the Guardians should still be encouraged and excited about seeing what type of player Brito can eventually develop into.
Despite some poorly timed injuries, which weren't Brito's fault, he’s done nothing but hit and perform at every level he’s been at.
Brito owns a Minor League career slash line of .273/.382/.449, including 56 home runs, 113 doubles, and 11 triples over six seasons. Plus, his switch-hitting ability could give the Guardians some much-needed balance in the lineup.
Stephen Vogt still believes Brito has the ability and skillset to be a solid player.
“I mean, we've seen some flashes of both sides of the plate. This kid can hit. I mean, controls the strike zone, knows how to find the barrel,” said Cleveland’s skipper last week.
It’ll be very interesting to see how Brito’s 2026 season plays out. He has the potential to be an impact player for the Guardians at any moment in time, but consistent playing time at one position will be a challenge for the Guardians to navigate.
