Cleveland Guardians prospect Just Campbell is one stop away from a potential MLB debut.
For a long time, the Cleveland Guardians have slow-played the development of some of their top prospects. Sometimes, it felt like the organization waited too long and was extra patient with promoting their young players to the next level.
That hasn’t been the case during the 2026 season, with the Guardians front office quickly moving a couple of their prospects through the farm system. The latest example of this is with right-handed pitching prospect Justin Campbell.
Campbell started the 2026 season with the High-A Lake County Captains. He made six starts and logged a 2.46 ERA (4 ER/15 IP) with a strikeout rate of 37 percent before the Guardians decided the right-hander was ready to join the Akron RubberDucks.
On May 3, Cleveland promoted Campbell to Double-A. He’s pitched just as well at this level, recording a 2.70 ERA (11 ER/36.2 IP) with the swing-and-miss still remaining strong. Campbell had a 28.9 percent strikeout rate during his brief stint at Double-A.
Now, on the last day of June, Cleveland announced that it had promoted Campbell to Triple-A to join the Columbus Clippers’ rotation.
Two months ago, Campbell was a long way off from making his MLB debut; now he’s just one stop away from reaching the big leagues.
Understanding why the Guardians are likely moving Campbell quickly through the farm system goes back to all the injuries he’s faced since being drafted.
After being drafted 37th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, Campbell underwent nerve surgery on his elbow in 2023 and Tommy John and wrist surgery in 2024. When the 25-year-old was pitching in his first High-A game in April, it was also his professional debut.
Cleveland moving Campbell quickly through the organization could have a direct correlation to the organization’s lack of overall pitching depth
The Guardians are the only team in MLB to use five starting pitchers so far during the season, and they even recently set a franchise record. That’s great, but it’s also not something Cleveland can get too comfortable with, either.
Unfortunately, the depth outside of Cleveland’s big-league rotation is thin. The next man up would likely be Logan Allen, Austin Peterson, or Yorman Gomez, in that order.
Now, as Campbell has already reached Triple-A, the Guardians potentially have another starting option who could be ready to make an impact by the beginning of September.
