Angel Genao could be the centerpiece in a blockbuster trade for the Cleveland Guardians.
There are a lot of needs to address before the MLB trade deadline if the Cleveland Guardians plan to be clear-cut favorites to win the American League Central or, at the very least, secure a spot in the postseason via a Wild Card spot.
If the Guardians do get aggressive ahead of August 3, there is one player that could end up becoming a key trade candidate for Cleveland, and that's the organization's No. 2-ranked prospect, Angel Genao.
Trading highly-touted prospects who are banging on the door of a big-league debut isn't typically the Guardians' way, but the situation with Genao is slightly different for a variety of reasons.
Genao has the potential to be a headliner in a fairly large trade considering he's still just 22 years old and performing at an elite level at Triple-A.
After being promoted early in the season on May 4, Genao has logged a .305/.389/.483 slash line with a 130 wRC+. The switch-hitter's strikeout rate of 15.6 percent and walk rate of 14.3 percent only fuel the fire for a promotion
If the Guardians dangle Genao to the right team, it wouldn't be surprising to see a return of a proven big-league hitter with a few years of team control left before free agency.

Well, Genao doesn't currently have a clear path for playing time at the big-league level.
The infielder is primarily a shortstop, but has also appeared at both second base and shortstop in 2026 and during his Minor league career.
(For those wondering, no, Genao has never played the outfield since signing with the team in 2021.)
With Jose Ramirez not going anywhere at third, Brayan Rocchio having an All-Star argument as the team's shortstop, and Cleveland continuing to give Travis Bazzana time to prove himself at second, everyday playing time
The 2027 might be a different story, but trading Genao within the next week would give Cleveland more firepower to win in 2026, and when a window is open, it's hard to ignore it.
Cleveland should not be actively shopping Genao in trade talks or be motivated to move him; there's still a world where he could fit into the team's long-term plans.
However, if moving a 22-year-old is what it takes to get a valuable piece back, it wouldn't be surprising to see Genao be traded.
